Honestly, I've been listening to hip hop since early 90s cuz I had older cousins and a young aunt that played it all the time. But when I heard this song, this was the first time I actually listened to an entire album. And don't be fooled: ? really wasn't checkin for Jay until Vol 2 came out. Reasonable Doubt wasn't as hot on the streets as Nas' joint was in 96 or the Fugees but I distinctly remember this album shaping my love for hip hop.
My cousin Brandon was playing this tape in his boombox while we were playing basketball and I had to beg my aunt to buy it for me so I could listen to it. My mom took it away eventually anyways

This made me love this thing we call hiphop. My dad had the record and i used to play that joint everyday.
Yup! this is mine too. whenever Rappers Delight came on, my mother would change the station. I remember the first time we heard this and she turned it up. and when I asked if she liked it she said "it has a Message". Years later I found out that, "that" was the name of the song. -
As soon as I heard the chorus I was hooked...

What made me fall in love is When I tried to do it myself. And to be honest I was garbage as ? when I look back but pretty good for my age.(12) my style was influenced by the radio, and I guess that's where my simplistic style came from even after a couple years of getting gradually better. Then that's when I started listening to PAC w/ hail mary, he changed ? for me. He changed the way I rapped, and thought about ? . He brought me a broader perspective of everything. He was the catalyst for me to open up to nas, big, jay-z(90's) and all types of hip hop (alternative, g-funk, 80's w/e). I was in middle-high school only bumpin old 90's ? , while everyones was on that autotune vibe. But, now I listen to all types of rap, from gucci to kweli, and Wayne to Andre 3k. . But the ? that had me fall wit it was hail mary.
