Why shouldn't Americans born in other countries be allowed to run for office? In my opinion, you are either an American citizen with the full blown rights of an American citizen or you aren't. Why should some American citizens have certain privileges and rights that others don't (and I don't mean on the basis of age, criminal history, class etc. but the idea that some people, legally, are 'more' American than others).

The same question can be applied to any other country in the world that doesn't allow non-native born citizens to become prime minister or president.

Can't have people spying for their native countries or having an emotional connection to their home country affecting how they run our country.

That's the easy response you were waiting for right? Dazzle us with your holier than thou rebuttal.

Why do you think I'm being self-righteous because I think it's unfair/inconsistent? I wasn't expecting or waiting for any kind of response.

Even children born and raised in a country with immigrant parents or grandparents can feel an emotional connection to other countries. There isn't necessarily a conflict between identifying with 2 or more countries. Your "loyalty" should be determined by your policies, actions and ideas, not your country of birth.

Being a natural born citizen is a constitutional requirement for becoming president. Is it a stupid xenophobic requirement that should be amended out of the constitution? Yes. But until that occurs, we have to follow the law.

I've heard some far fetched things, but your theory is really out there. So basically you want universal freedom for the entire world & a nation's sovereignty means nothing. In your perfect world just how do folks overcome the language barriers? just how does one individual even have the ability to understand another countries culture etc.,4 the lack of a better way of putting it -- THIS IS JUST PLAIN DUMB.

you really think like this? people overcome language barriers by learning new languages - it happens all the time. people understand other cultures by immersion or even just sustained contact - again, it happens all the time.

do you live in a bunker?

this has nothing to do with being president. i never said that the president shouldnt be born here. I happen to agree with that, my homecountry has had scandals regarding the birthplace of one of its former presidents. REAL scandals, not this little birth certificate bit that anyone with an IQ over 50 could see that IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR A PERSON TO GET SO FAR INTO NATIONAL POLITICS TODAY IN THE AGE OF INTERNET AND 24 hr NEWS AND HIDE HIS BIRTHPLACE. but read what you wrote.

how do folks overcome the language barriers? just how does one individual even have the ability to understand another countries culture et

do you honestly believe that it is impossible for a person to not understand the culture or learn the language of a land foreign to him? that has to be hands down the stupidest, most xenophobic statement i have ever read on this site. if everyone thought like you do, we'd still be living in caves and holes in the ground and offering sacrifices to a sun ? .

so i repeat, you are the stupidest thing i have ever encountered on this site. Truly more resembling vegetable or mineral than animal, really.

i can barely understand that mess, but ill repeat.

You said that you don't understand how people overcome language barriers. And that you are wondering how one individual has the ability to understand another country's culture.

that is stupid, xenophobic, and pitiful for a grown human being to say. that tells me that you are uneducated, ignorant, and more than likely a terrible bore to associate with. I love this country, but if it ever goes down in flames it wont be because of socialism, bankruptcy, or terrorism. it will be because of minds like yours. I truly pity you.

Nowhere in the constitution does it say that to be President you have to be born in this country. It says NATURAL BORN CITIZEN... define that ? because the "founding fathers" definitely didn't.

A child born abroad to two US citizen parents is a natural-born citizen: Provided, That at least one citizen parent had previously resided in the United States or one of its outlying possessions. U.S. Code: Title 8, 1401.

How come you gotta refuse to understand what the term means IE 'natural born citizen'? ALL you gotta do is a little research for the answers....btw this information superhighway doesn't have any restrictions attached....even people like you can learn something.

Weirdest poster alive. I was just trying to correct your grammar and you just went off about something I don´t about.
