Simple question, tough answer. Where would he be today career wise? We all know RD was way too complex and lyrical for mainstream ears.
Its kinda hard to imagine Jay being a underground rapper who has his fans in the ? backpacker section, but that probably would have happened if he didnt switch his lyrics to pop after 96...
