My guess is that it got left behind when the new Millennium hit so its probably back there in the 90s somewhere but don't quote me on that.

The media along with the record companies decided to start capitalizing off of a quick buck instead of quality. So forth the ? came.

Exactly and it's not only R&B it goes for Hip-Hop as well but the quality of music as severely fallin' off thanks to the last decade. -
I agree with everything mentioned above... Plus the death of the R&B GROUP hurt as well... people(artists) started thinking as individuals and wanted to strike out on their own for different reasons... when was the last time we heard good music from an R&B group??

Because RnB singers all the sudden wanted to become rappers..the whole RnB thug era.. killed it..
HipHop and R&B in the 90's > Now
Aint nothing like Jodeci, 112, Boyz II men,Fugees
and Tribe called quest, 2pac, Scarface, Geto Boys -

EVERYBODY HAD THEY SHINE IN THE 90'S
Contemporary R&B 90-00 (Luther Vandross, Brownstone, R. Kelly, Silk, Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, Boys II Men, Mariah Carey)
New Jack Swing 90-92 (Guy, Shanice, Chuckii Booker, Today, Bell Biv Devoe, Color Me Bad, Public Announcement, Tony!Toni!Tone!)
Hip Hop Soul 93-96 (Mary J. Blidge, Jodeci, Dru Hill, Aaliyah, Monica, Brandy, Blackstreet, SWV, Ginuwine, Soul for Real, Montell Jordan)
Neo Soul 95-00 (Groove Theory, Deangelo, Maxwell, Erykah Badu, Musiq Soulchild, Eric Benet, Christion)
Pop R&B 90-00 (Micheal Jackson, TLC, Janet Jackson, Prince, Mark Morrison, K-CI & JOJO, Usher, Destiny's Child, Total, 702)
Jamaican R&B/Ragga/Dancehall (Shabba Ranks, Super Cat, Shaggy)
we even had a lli Dance R&B 90-92 (CeCe Peniston etc)
but I agree, by 2003 alot cats got lost & didn't have no identity because the game was changing so fast (Dru Hill, Ginuwine), others faded because of grimy deals, pop/rap sounding r&b & bad promotion so now only a few left. so when they do drop albums, people cop it cuz they know it's good stuff. -
the 90's had the most ? you can play forever,in the y2k most ? you want to forget
