At E3, Nintendo will be introducing new hardware, the Nintendo 3DS.

In an official release, Nintendo describes the portable as allowing games to be "enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses". According to Nintendo, the product will go on sale between April 2010 and March 2011.

The Nintendo 3DS will succeeded the Nintendo DS series and will have backward compatibility for Nintendo DS and DSi games. The Nintendo 3DS is not a spin-off. It's an all-new line of hardware, not simply a new model of the DS. Despite having the letters "DS" in the name, it's a working title, and the use of terms like "backwards compatible" and the fact it's succeeding the "Nintendo DS series" sounds a lot like this is the first of Nintendo's next generation of handheld gaming devices

In early January, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata gave an interview with Japan's second largest newspaper The Asahi Shimbun in which he apparently said the Nintendo DS successor will have "highly detailed graphics, and it will be necessary to have a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing"." Iwata claims he then replied, "Those things are naturally being required. But do you think it would sell with just that?" Iwata emphasized that this last part was left completely out.

It appears that the extra element Nintendo believed was necessary to really sell the DS successor is 3D.

    That ? sounds stupid.

Then again, it's Nintendo, and they have a knack for making things that initially sound stupid work, so we'll see.

    Additional 3DS Details Surface
Newspapers hint at rumble, analogue control stick and more for upcoming hardware.
    by IGN Staff

March 23, 2010 - Nintendo's surprise announcement of the 3DS hardware yesterday lacked details. In fact, aside from promising 3D visuals and backwards compatibility with the current DS line, Nintendo didn't say much at all.

That didn't stop some of Japan's biggest newspapers from digging in a bit deeper. It's unclear what's educated speculation and what was heard from Nintendo itself, but we'll pass along the info anyway.

Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan's largest paper, reported on some possible 3D technology for the system. The paper says "it is believed" that the system will make use of a Sharp 3D LCD panel. The system will have a film attached to the screen, separated form the screen by a tiny space. This setup makes the image look slightly different for the two eyes, giving the game visuals a 3D look.

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun, the paper that usually breaks Nintendo hardware stories, reported on some of the additional tech that could go into the system. Nintendo plans on using a control stick for controlling characters in 3D; while the paper does not use the term "analogue stick," this is presumably what's being referred to. The system will also include rumble. Nintendo acquired patents for this control technology last year, the paper reports.

The paper also repors that the system will have expanded battery life and greater wireless range over the current DS. Its screen won't be as large as the DSi XL screen, though. Nintendo is also looking into including an accelerometer, which would allow you to tilt the system to control the action.

The papers didn't list any sources for their information. However, this is typical for larger mainstream Japanese publications, so even if the above is speculation, there's probably some good foundation behind it.

All should be clarified when Nintendo 3DS is fully unveiled at this year's E3 in June.

I want to see how they pull off 3D without the need to wear glasses. Don't play handhelds no more, but I'm interested in seeing this pulled off. And if they can do it, does that mean in the very near future we'll be able to watch 3D movies without the need of 3D glasses?

The Nintendo DS family of game devices will soon have a successor, and its name is the 3DS.
According to Nintendo's Tuesday announcement, the 3DS will boast 3D gaming capability without requiring users to wear "any special glasses" to play titles.
The company said that the 3DS will "succeed [the] 'Nintendo DS series.'" Perhaps most importantly, the 3DS will boast backward compatibility, allowing users to play games originally built for the Nintendo DS or DSi.

Nintendo was stingy with details. It didn't indicate how the 3D functionality would work with the 3DS. It also failed to mention how much the console would cost or what games would ship with it. Nintendo plans to offer full details on the 3DS at the E3 show in June. The company declined to comment further.
The Nintendo DS has been an extremely successful product for the Japanese company, selling 125 million units worldwide through December 2009. This weekend, Nintendo aims to keep that momentum going with the release of the Nintendo DSi XL, which boasts notably larger screens.
Nintendo's decision to offer a 3D gaming device will be controversial. Although the industry is seemingly doubling down on 3D technology, some are skeptical of its true appeal. And whether gamers will want to consistently view 3D games is decidedly up for debate.
Then again, Nintendo has spent the last few years taking routes that were initially scoffed at. When it first announced the Wii game console, critics were doubtful about its broader market appeal. Nearly four years later, the Wii is the world's most popular video game console.
Nintendo said that it plans to launch the 3DS during its next fiscal year, which runs April 1, 2010, through March 31, 2011.
