if you want to understand the storyline as a whole then play the first two....if not just get AC 2 then you could start from there -
I got my copy yesterday....pretty good so far

If he wanted to learn about altair he could play the first one but he doesnt have to tho to understand the whole story -

On my second playthough, going to take all forts, get 100% sync, and get all the collectables on this one.

For those that reached in ending... If ya;ll haven't played AC3 Liberation yet (The one with the Creole heroine).. Here's an interesting ending to that game:
