Don't just tell a tall tale. Play in one, too.

Unlike some titles on PlayStation 3 like LittleBigPlanet 2, Killzone 3 or Resistance 3, Infamous 2 wouldn't strike many as a game that needs DLC. It tells its plot pretty well on its own, and regardless of if you took the good or bad ending (or both), you got a lot of bang for your buck in bringing Cole MacGrath through his second dedicated story on the PS3. There's little more Infamous fans could ask for in the Infamous 2 experience.

But it's this lack of a natural fit for DLC that makes Festival of Blood so fascinating. Initially announced at GamesCom in Germany this past August, Festival of Blood isn't Infamous 2 DLC per se, but rather a full game in its own right, one that you'll download directly off of the PlayStation Network when it's released in the coming weeks. You don't need Infamous 2 to play it.

Throwing gamers back into the fictional New Orleans-inspired city known as New Marais, Festival of Blood takes place during the events of Infamous 2. But as you'll find out when you watch its intro, Festival of Blood doesn't tell a subplot that's at all important to your enjoyment of the game that inspired it. In fact, you could conceivably play it without having any familiarity with Sucker Punch's franchise at all and still get something out of it.

    Festival of Blood Intro Trailer

In Festival of Blood, the main character is still Cole, but he's... well... changed. Zeke, Cole's best friend, sits at a seedy New Marais bar as Festival of Blood unfolds. Sitting nearby is a buxom woman that Zeke wants to impress. At first, this woman is anything but thrilled while talking to Cole's buddy. In fact, she makes fun of the fact that he's reading a comic book at the bar. But Zeke begins to spin a yarn about that comic book and his friend Cole, acting as if it tells a real story. And so the fictional events of Festival of Blood begin in earnest, putting you in the role of Cole as Zeke narrates a story that he makes up as he goes along.

Now, Infamous 2 itself is obviously fictional, but when I say Festival of Blood is fictional, I mean it is within the context of the Infamous universe. Cole is a vampire chasing an enemy known as ? Mary all over New Marais in Festival of Blood, and he only has eight hours to find her, but it's all a made up story designed to impress Zeke's cleavage-showing bar buddy. So don't worry about any continuity issues.

In terms of gameplay, there's plenty of differences between the Infamous and Infamous 2 experience you may be used to and the gameplay provided by Festival of Blood. Because of the fact that Cole is a vampire in this story, and is thus inherently evil, there is no Karma Meter. Instead, a Corruption Meter takes its place, allowing Cole to channel his evil vampire energies. By pressing and holding the R2 button, Cole can use his Vampire Vision, allowing him to see who has been corrupted and turned into vampires around him. Cole can even feed his Corruption Meter by sucking human blood and earn special vampire-related attacks that would be otherwise unknown to Infamous and Infamous 2 veterans.

Sucker Punch was kind enough to show me plenty of the game, and I got a lot of hands-on time with it. I also saw quite a bit of the game's story, which I won't spoil for you here. But you can rest assured that Festival of Blood is very much an Infamous game in terms of how it feels and how it plays, regardless of some of the aforementioned new additions. Parkour is still the name of the game in Festival of Blood, and the entire city of New Marais is available for you to explore, albeit updated to reflect the Halloween-like celebration of Festival of Blood. Cole still has access to his basic electrical attacks, and he still recharges his power using whatever electrical devices are around him. In other words, if you know how to play Infamous already, you'll know exactly what to do the second you pick up the controller.

Infamous 2: Festival of Blood Cutscene

Interestingly, for such a robust experience, Sucker Punch and Sony have decided to put Festival of Blood out on the cheap. It will only run you $9.99. And better yet, for those who enjoyed creating UGC missions in Infamous 2, there will be a whole new set of tools for you to use in Festival of Blood, allowing you to make Festival of Blood-specific missions (that will unfortunately not cross-over with Infamous 2). You'll even be able to make your own cutscenes this time around, adding a distinct story-telling option to your creations.

Festival of Blood will also be PlayStation Move-enabled (and will automatically patch Infamous 2 for identical functionality), though I wasn't able to get hands-on with Move controls during my demo.

I'm excited to see more of Festival of Blood, and if you're a fan of Infamous and Infamous 2 like I am, you should definitely keep this cheap download on your radar. Complete with in-game collectibles to find and PlayStation Network Trophies to earn, Festival of Blood is a bite-sized expansion into the Infamous universe that will tide people over until Sucker Punch hopefully does more with its newest series, whether on PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita or beyond.

I "accidentally" pre-paid for it. I never buy a game without checking reviews first. But when I saw the article on it, I thought they gave it a 9.0, but that was for Infamous 2 itself and not this.
