Even when considering Willie Smith Ward's nine previous convictions, this is excessive: On Wednesday, a jury in Waco, Texas sentenced Ward to 50 years in jail for stealing a $35 rack of ribs from a grocery store and then telling a store employee that he had a knife.
In September 2011, Ward stole the ribs from a grocery store, hiding them under his shirt. A store employee noticed the bulge and confronted Ward in the store's parking lot, at which point the ribs apparently fell from Ward's shirt. The employee then asked Ward if he was hiding anything else. “I got a knife,” Ward said.
“Now you just turned a ticket into a serious crime,” the employee replied.
Ward, who never actually showed a knife, took off running and was later arrested. He was charged and convicted of robbery and sentenced to 50 years.“This verdict shows that the citizens of this county will not tolerate a continued disrespect and disregard for other people and their property,” said Assistant District Attorney J.R. Vicha, who prosecuted Ward with Chris Bullajian. “People who choose to do so will be dealt with seriously and appropriately.”
Ward has previous felony convictions for burglary, attempted robbery, aggravated assault, leaving the scene of an accident, and possession of ? . The 41-year-old will have to serve at least a quarter of his sentence before he's eligible for parole.

Celebrities get ? DUIs - endangering the lives of citizens on the road and get ? 6 months house arrest. I hope the judge that gave that sentence gets a bullet put right in between his eyes...what kind of ? gives someone two consecutive life sentences for ? stealing meat? -
9 Convictions though? Dudes a low-life anyway. Not really heart broken about the ? not being in society anymore to be honest. Not excessive at all.
And if he REALLY needed food there are churches, shelters, food drives, all types of options other than stealing. Sorry cant ride for the ? on this one. I'd put his ? away too. -

A jury in Waco’s 19th State District Court also didn’t like the 43-year-old Ward’s previous five felony and four misdemeanor convictions and recommended that Ward be sentenced to 50 years in prison as a habitual criminal.

Man charged with killing couple, ? toddler hours after release from prison

(Reuters) - A 24-year-old man has been charged with killing an elderly couple and ? their 2-year-old great-grandchild, in a crime that occurred just hours after he was released from prison in a separate sexual-assault case, state officials said on Tuesday.
Jerry Active was arrested on Saturday by police and has been charged in the murders of Sorn Sreap, 71, and her husband, Touch Chea, 73, and the ? of the toddler they were babysitting that night. Active is also charged with ? Sreap.
The elderly victims' bodies had signs of blunt-force trauma, but autopsies will determine the cause of death, the Anchorage Police Department said in a statement. Active could spend the rest of his life in prison if convicted of the murders and rapes.
Active, who had pleaded guilty to breaking into a Dillingham, Alaska, home in 2009 and sexually assaulting a child and other residents, was released from prison on probation on Saturday morning after serving part of a seven-year sentence, said Kaci Schroeder, a spokeswoman for the Alaska Department of Corrections.
It was not immediately clear why Active was allowed to serve less than his full sentence. Schroeder said she did not have certain details about his case.
He was released from prison in Anchorage at 8:09 a.m. Saturday, about 12 hours before the crimes were reported, Schroeder said.
The toddler's parents returned home from a movie and found the suspect naked in a bedroom with the child and the great-grandparents dead, said the Anchorage police statement. The parents confronted the suspect, but he escaped, police said.
Active was arraigned on Sunday, with bail set at $1.5 million, according to court records. A state judge on Tuesday scheduled a June 5 preliminary hearing.
A public defender for Active could not be reached for comment.
Active has a lengthy court record, with several misdemeanor arrests prior to the 2009 felony case. He was first released on the Dillingham case on October 2, 2011, but violated probation and was sent back to prison two days later, according to records Schroeder released.
Since then he has been in and out of prison after committing other probation violations, Schroeder said.
