One of the projects that first flared up during a rash of announcements about such adaptations was DreamWorks’ acquisition of cult manga/anime title Ghost In The Shell. Things have been largely quiet since then, though Avatar/Shutter Island writer Laeta Kalogridis was hired to craft a new draft of the script back in 2009. Deadline reports that director Rupert Sanders is now the man charged with bringing it to screens.

Sanders, who last made Snow White And The Huntsman, will potentially be working instead from a screenplay by Hoax scribe William Wheeler. We say potentially, because this thing has been floating in development limbo for a while, and has shown no signs of wanting to leave.

Still, despite the understandable concerns of those who love Masamune Shirow’s original 1989 work (which spawned three manga editions, three films a TV series and several video games, Ghost certainly boasts a compelling story angle. The focus is on Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg law enforcer and part of the member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission, which specialises in tackling technology-related crimes. Live-action will be a tougher medium to work in than either the printed page or animation, but if James Cameron can find a way to shoot Avatar, it’s possible to make a good Ghost film. Assuming you can ? the story properly…

The Wachowski siblings have cited it as one of the major inspirations for the Matrix films, though we’re not sure it should be held responsible for the second and third entries…

This is one of the few anime I think could translate well into a Hollywood live action movie. As long as they don't turn it into some silly "Girl Power" movie. The Major is already a strong character. They don't have to go out of their way to focus the story on that.

Ghost would make an excellent live action film. They will westernize the ? out of it though.

    White woman playing lead
Name change for the characters (westernizing the name)
Set in a futuristic New York City.

All I know is that I didn't see Shirow's name no where in that article.

GITS is not the kind of story you just throw into western culture all ? nilly If I had to compare it to anything, I'd be Ronin, Children Of Man, and Seven. It's a serious story being told. That gimmicky slow motion and cliche action with a white ? wearing a purple wig ain't gonna do this ? justice.

I disagree. GitS can be westernized pretty easily. The Futuristic SciFi themes are a lot more prevalent than anything directly related to Japanese culture. If they turn it into some cliche femme fatale film, it will suck. But if they just stick to the core themes and retain some of the cerebral nature of the stories then it would be fine.

I wish James Cameron ditched his obsession with Avatar and took a stab at adapting this (especially since I know he's a fan of the original). We could have been onto something special. Instead we get this joker directing it.
