Stumbled across this series of matches between Butch Reed and Ric Flair for the NWA Championship. Apparently, Reed won the title, but something happened (he was born black) that caused his initial victory (clean) not to be recognized. Check them out....

Title win and dispute...

1.5 months later for the rematch

3 months later, different territory (Mid South - non title)
Since it's a different territory surrounding the same title, what happened between the two over the past 5-6 months isn't even acknowledged. Flair calls Reed a monkey before the match to....

I have to do some deeper research on why he was teased as winning the belt, because everything I found were about title wins surrounding territory belts and tag belts. but I read some place that Bill Watts or someone from the Watts family that was booking at the time, liked Reed, and wanted to see him as champion. But the NWA championship committee veto'd Watts decision to make Reed champion and came up with an excuse to not recognize the win.

Seeing how this feud was booked over the course of 6 months, makes me miss territories and multiple promotions.

Damn I always thought it was Ron Simmons but, I did not know it was his partner Butch Reed that had the NWA title first.

This angle resulted in Butch Reed winning the title, but not being recognized for whatever reason the NWA Championship Committee came up with. It was a swerve on the fans, so Reed's win will never be in the record books, not even as a footnote.

Ron Simmons is the first recognized WCW Champion of African American descent, not NWA. By the time Ron won the title, WCW had already broken away from the NWA.

Ron "The Truth" Killings (aka WWE R-Truth) is the first recognized NWA World Champion of African American descent. He beat Ken Shamrock for the title on August 7, 2002

Truth went on to win the title again from AJ Styles in 2004 in a 4-Way that included Raven and Chris Harris (AMW)

    Apollo

i think the WWE signed him to a developmental deal based on his looks and found out he couldn't wrestle their style and released him from the dev. deal.
