The actors/actresses
The script
The story (not necessarily the same as the script)
The director
The visual effects
Or does it depend on the movie? I think it comes down to the director. Case in point: After Earth. The story wasn't bad and we all know Will Smith is a great actor. Jaden on the other hand may or may not be a good actor, given he still may need time to mature. The CGI elements were decent but the entire time I watched I'm thinking, why the ? is this movie so unbearable?
Then it dawned on me, the same reason I hated The Last Airbender: M. Knight Shalayman. He is the Mike D'Atoni of directing. Only a guy like Shalayman could take a great actor like Will Smith and make him look and sound like a barely functioning ? .

Idc about director or visuals if you don't have a good story.

None of that ? matters if ur fforwarding to see only fight scenes -
The ? scene.
A realistic, yet not overly violent(irreversible) scene is goat. -

Bruh...for some reason I just read the first line of your post and started dying. -
The editing
Very over looked and underrated process that can make or break the continuity of film
no matter good the directing, acting, script etc. is -
Story telling. Give me something to grab hold of. Something that makes me care about the characters

Depends on the movie. Never really watched a Arnold movie for the story. Give him a gun, one-liners and I'm good. Comedies depend on the actors though. Don't plan on seeing anything else from ? , Martin Lawrence or Tyler Perry.

Characters ...and how well developed they are
