According to wikipedia they both came out in 1966. Does anyone know if the Black Panther Party came out before 1966?

The Black Panther (T'Challa) is a fictional character appearing in publications by Marvel Comics. Created by writer-editor Stan Lee and penciller-co-plotter Jack Kirby, he first appeared in Fantastic Four #52 (July 1966). He is the first black superhero in mainstream American comics, debuting several years before such early African-American superheroes as Marvel Comics' the Falcon and Luke Cage, and DC Comics' Tyroc, Black Lightning and Green Lantern John Stewart.

The Black Panther Party or BPP (originally the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense) was a black revolutionary socialist organization active in the United States from 1966 until 1982. The Black Panther Party achieved national and international notoriety through its involvement in the Black Power movement and U.S. politics of the 1960s and 1970s.[2]

They were independent of each other. Not sure which came first but, at least, from the comic standpoint Black Panther's named was not drawn from the political group. In fact, in later appearances Marvel changed the name to Black Leopard to avoid the direct comparison.
