In 1968 the Guatemalan Army began the systematic slaughter of the native Mayan population. This period of massacre is sometimes referred to as the “Silent Holocaust”, and led to extermination en masse of native Mayan communities. The death toll in the Guatemalan Genocide exceeded that of El Salvador, Nicaragua, Argentina, and Chile combined. Guatemalan government forces – buoyed by financing and training from the United States – committed over 90% of the human rights violations during the war.

I never knew anything about the Mayan Genocide until I came across this video yesterday.

This video is about the thousands of immigrants that are coming into the country through Mexico mainly because of Obama's 2012 decision to not to deport illegal immigrant children back to their home country.

I've always wondered if those ancient lost civilizations of South America were really the result of Europeans committing genocide on the natives at the time.

mostly incidentally due to disease; you have situations where Europeans arrive thinking "this place is kind of depopulated"... but that's just because disease moves a little faster

did intentionally destroy artifacts from those civilizations, though (although not expressly to wipe them out all the time, but hey)
