The Franchise Shane Douglas is one of the greatest characters ever. Some of you younger cats just don't understand and will never get it because retrospective clips will never do it justice. Context is key and it really was something you had to witness as it was happening cause it was unprecedented at the time. There wasn't anything like it in pro wrestling before.

To see someone purposely say "? kayfabe" and shoot on the mic like he used to was just crazy even to those of us who knew it was fake by that point. It was always hilarious how one of the guys who helped bury Douglas the worst in WWF just went on to blatantly play shark biter with his unique gimmick. I know no idea's original especially in pro wrestling but lol.

Shane did more for ecw then HHH did for wwe. These are issues that newer wrestling fans won't understand.

You have to look at that in context though. What exactly was ECW before Shane Douglas? What was the WWE before HHH?

Douglas did a lot for a small, independent company that stayed small and independent. HHH helped keep the machine running another 15-20 years.

Being a global conglomerate compared to an indie is a moot point. The measure of success for any business is staying in the black & growing as a company and ECW did just that thanks in large part to Douglas during that time. Even Taz, Dreamer and RVD would attest to that let alone Heyman. Don't confuse Heyman's mismanagement of money and shrewd business down the line with the company's status at that point in time.

Sure it stayed small and independent but so what? they still were earning coins and the brand was becoming stronger and expanding wider thanks to Douglas being a draw for them among others. This was a period where characters like The Franchise helped ECW reinvent itself from rinky dinky Eastern Championship Wrestling days to the point that people like Vince McMahon and Dusty Rhodes now had to look at their product too. They were making noise and becoming a threat. They were pioneering ? that is now overused in pro wrestling but back then was unheard of in every way when it came to the west.

Hell it encouraged Vince to collab with them and fish for talent down there as well as book the 90's invasion. It became like an unofficial farm territory for the big leagues thanks in part to what people like Douglas did.The truth is that Douglas to ECW proved to be more profitable than HHH's Game era did to WWE. That was actually one of the least profitable eras in WWE history.
