We’ve been talking about a new Halloween movie ever since Halloween II came out back in 2009, but now it’s actually happening. This isn’t a rumor or a random update from a hopeful producer. Dimension Films and Trancas International Films just officially announced that Halloween Returnsgoes into production in July.

We already knew that Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton penned the script, but now Dimension and Trancas also added that Dunstan is set to direct the film as well. Dunstan and Melton co-wrote a bunch of Sawscripts, Piranha 3DD, The Collector and The Collection. Dunstan also directed those last twoso Halloween Returns will mark his third go behind the lens.

I’m not a big The Collector fan, so it’s tough to get hyped about the new Halloweenmovie based on Dunstan and Melton’s involvement alone. According to the press release, the log line is being kept under wraps, but Moviehole claims to have tracked down the story details:

“‘Halloween Returns’ will pit a new group of Haddonfield youngsters against Myers. The now 18-year-old child of one of Myers’ victims plays a central role along with the child of a cop whose long been obsessed with Myers’ case, even putting it before his own daughter.

Myers is now on death row and the two kids with their own personal vendettas against the killer sneak in to watch his execution. But when things go awry and Myers escapes, the pair, along with their friends, find themselves in the firing line.”

We can’t take the information as fact until Dimension and Trancas confirm it, but if the film really is going into production in July, they’ve got to be casting now and plot details leak via casting announcements all the time. I’m actually hoping that Moviehole’s description is the real deal. Who wouldn’t want to see Michael Myers shut down his own execution?
