I actually wouldn't say that... Illmatic didn't have much influence on hip hop at all. -
Too close to call between Paid In Full and Illmatic. Reasonable Doubt, Ready to Die, 36 Chambers, and The Eminem Show are all contenders as well.

Can't pick one....I rotate between Illmatic, The Low End Theory, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold our People Back, Aquemini, Paid in Full, Three Feet High and Rising (hard to beat for straight originality), Black Star, Enter the 36 Chambers (best hip hop work out album EVER), and the Score.
Sdie note: It was Written was better lyrically but Illmatic had better production--all star line-up. -

This album changed hip hop sonically and the BOMB SQUAD production provided the BLue print for NWA's Straight outta Compton. as noted when Cube left NWA he fly to new york to work with who?? The Bomb Squad and Public Enemys team to create the classic Amerikkkas Most wanted.. If NATION OF MILLIONS aint #1 or in your top 5 you know absolutely NOTHING about Hip Hop or you were born in the 90's and too young to know your history but Itd be like saying you love the NBA but didnt know who Dr J was!!! -

Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, Ready To Die and All Eyez On Me STILL have my head spinnin in terms of content and delivery.
They all were ahead of their time because they hold just as much relevance now as they did when they first dropped. Arguably more. -
