'Tekken X Street Fighter' news: senior designer says game is still in development

It has been five years since the crossover game "Tekken X Street Fighter" was announced—BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment's take on the crossover series of two of the biggest fighting games franchise. Some people may have thought that the project had been abandoned. However, such is not the case, as the game is still on and is currently under development.

In a recent interview with French website Gameblog as translated by Shoryuken, senior game designer Michael Murray revealed that while they are indeed silent about the project progress, "Tekken X Street Fighter" is actually under development. However, they are just focusing on other games at the moment.

"[Tekken x Street Fighter] is still in development," Murray told Gameblog. "It's difficult at the moment to find a period to launch the game since 'Tekken 7' was released. For the moment, we are focusing on 'Tekken 7.'"

The interview also tried to get information from Murray regarding which platforms the game will be released on, now that newer versions of gaming consoles are available since the game's release plan was first announced. While Murray's answer were evasive, he did say that the game's development is based on PC, which could hint that it might come to the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.

The conflict Murray talked about mirrors the previous statement by BANDAI NAMCO's "Tekken" series producer Katsuhiro Harada, saying that "Tekken 7" and "Street Fighter V" have conflicting releases.

"It might seem like we haven't started on it at all," Harada said, "but the character line-up has been decided upon since a very long time ago, and we've already finished the polygon models, moves, and systems."

Tekken X Street Fighter: Harada wants to surprise people with something unexpected, character lineup decided a -long time ago

Bandai Namco's Katsuhiro Harada wants to bring something new to the table fans aren't expecting for Tekken X Street Fighter, the long promised entry which will pit the two fighting game franchises against each other again.

Expressing that expectations for TxSF have been built up a bit too much due to delays, Harada feels like they will need some kind of twist to draw people in.

"Tekken X Street Fighter is a game that's already been announced publicly. Just putting it out on the shelves won't be fun at all, after this long wait, so we need some sort of 'surprise'," said Harada.

Reason for the delay, Tekken X Street Fighter may end up being a working title

Harada repeated what he said previously about why Tekken X Street Fighter had been delayed — namely that it was difficult to get the game out when they had a lot of numbered titles being released.

They're facing a similar situation now with the upcoming releases of Street Fighter 5 and Tekken 7.

He added that the game known as Tekken X Street Fighter is actually just a working title, and when it's released, it may be called something different.

'Surprise' could be the reason for game's title change; character lineup and models have been completed

Some many be shocked to learn that the character lineup for TxSF was decided long ago, and the models and system are already done as well.

"It might look like we've made no progress at all, but we actually decided the character lineup quite some time ago, and we've also completed the polygon models, the moves and the game system as well," Harada stated.

Still, the game could change shape, if what Harada has in mind comes to fruition. Apparently, he's had this thought for awhile, but hasn't announced publicly what he's thinking.

"I'm not sure what will end up happening exactly, but I've had something in mind for a long time. So, we might even change the title of the game," noted Harada.

Well with Akuma showing up in Tekken 7, this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

I'm hoping they do something like Capcom vs SNK 2 for bosses. We could get Devil Akuma and SnH Heihachi.

Well it's been 5 years and this is still in early development so it's safe to say this has been on the back burner for quite some time.
