Albany police are investigating a reported assault that happened overnight.

Officers say they responded to Empire Commons, a dorm on the UAlbany campus, just before 1:30 Saturday morning for a report of three women who were assaulted.

The victims told police a verbal argument with a group of about 10 to 12 white men and women started while they were riding on a CDTA bus on Western Avenue. The group reportedly used racial slurs toward the three students, and then became physical, punching and kicking.

Two of the victims were taken to Albany Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Police and UAlbany are looking into if the attack was racially motivated.

UAlbany's president, Robert J. Jones, issued a statement which read in part:

"I am deeply concerned, saddened and angry about this incident. There is no place in the UAlbany community for violence, no place for racial intolerance and no place for gender violence. I call upon all members of UAlbany to unite. We must show the world that we stand for inclusiveness and stand against bias, violence and hatred."

There will be a #DefendBlackGirlsUAlbany rally Monday at the small fountain on UAlbany's campus at 5:30 p.m.
