I didn't discover Hip Hop until a couple years back after a life-long (I'm 28) obsession with Jazz, Experimental music and all types of ? and was lookin for some suggestions. All the albums I've got and love are these
Jeru - Sun Rises In The East
Nas - Illmatic
Big L - Lifestylez and The Devil's Son single
Wu - 36 Chambers
GZA - Liquid Swords
Raekwon - Only Built
Method - Tical
OC - Word
I mainly tend to listen for atmosphere in music in general and Liquid Swords, Sun Rises, 36 Chambers and Lifestylez struck me. What else should I check out for that basement, damp kinda vibe?

Hey, I just posted a mixtape in the other thread entitled 'Losing the Essence' (page 4)... it's filled with Jazz influence as most hip hop is, but will probably be to your liking. I'm also into Jazz myself.
Anyways, one Artist that I'd recommend (and you can get this online), is Nujabes. He was a Japanese producer who died at the start of this year. His music had lots of Jazz influence.
Another group I'd recommend is Jazz Liberatorz who have a great album entitled 'Clin D'oeil'. I think they're a french group, they're extremely talented. But really, a lot of underground stuff would suit your needs. Check my mixtape as I say, it'll be a good start for you. -
ILLUS- Feel Good Music
Brother Ali- US (actually his whole collection is awesome)
Atmosphere ( When Life Gives You Lemons...
Public Enemy- Fear of a Black Planet
BDP: Ghetto Music
De La Soul- 3 Feet High and Rising
Lyrics Born (any of his albums)
Mos Def- Black on Both Sides
Blackalicious- Blazing Arrow (a classic!) -
go listen to the mixtape posted in the 'losing the essence thread' and the other on in the 'essence weekly playlist#2'...youll get alot of variety of good hiphop and alot of which has jazz undertones...glad you landed here man, stay tuned!!
