A 7-year-old boy went missing in a Japanese forest after his parents made him get out of the car as punishment.

Approximately 150 rescue workers are looking for Yamato Tanooka in a wooded area on Hokkaido, which is home to a species of brown bear. the northernmost of Japan's four main islands, according to reports in Japan.

His parents initially told the authorities that their son had disappeared on Saturday while they were picking vegetables, but later admitted they had made him get out of the car "as discipline."

The father returned to the site where they left him a few minutes later, but the boy was gone.
The second-grader was being punished for throwing rocks while playing at a river earlier in the day.
He was last seen wearing a black jacket and red athletic shoes, according to NHK.

Authorities are investigating whether the case is subject to child abandonment.
