According to CNN, Breitbart has fired Katie McHugh, the writer who tweeted in response to Saturday’s terror attacks in London that there “would be no deadly terror attacks in the U.K. if Muslims didn’t live there.”

McHugh, formerly editor at The Daily Caller, has a history of making inflammatory and history-challenged claims on Twitter, including incendiary comments about Muslims, Mexicans, and calls for a “crusade” in response to terror attacks.

CNN’s Oliver Darcy spoke with several of McHugh’s colleagues at Breitbart about her tweets, who called the comments “appalling,” “terrible,” and “dumb.”

McHugh was defiant in the face of criticism, pinning the tweet to the top of her account, and retweeting several tweets from an account calling her Breitbart colleagues “Cucks,” “? ,” and “losers.”

Per CNN, Breitbart “Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow announced McHugh’s departure internally Monday morning.”

The ouster of McHugh could be a sign that Breitbart — which has danced with the alt-right and white nationalism since its inception — could be attempting to purge the website’s more controversial factions inhibiting its goal of becoming a serious news outlet.

UPDATE –– 12:58 pm ET: McHugh confirmed she was fired from Breitbart after her tweet about the London attack:

McHugh is seeking to raise $10,000 to cover “essential medical bills that she has to pay, while finding another job.” She’s also asking for the money to “send a message to Breitbart, the liberal media, and apologists for Islamic terrorism.”

In her fundraising post, McHugh also says her former employer “squealed at pressure from leftist CNN, which apparently has anonymous pro-Islam sources at Breitbart,” referring to Darcy’s report quoting Breitbart colleagues.

In a statement, McHugh held: “I said nothing wrong. As President Donald Trump says, if we don’t get smart, it will only get worse.”

McHugh also adapted a favorite talking point of the Trump administration to her own predicament, slamming the leakers: “It’s also interesting Breitbart News chose to fire me rather than colleagues leaking to CNN.”

‘Too Racist for Breitbart?’ Twitter Points and Laughs as Fired Breitbart Writer Whines Online

Katie McHugh, who was fired from Breitbart after an incendiary remark she tweeted in the wake of the London Bridge terror attack received widespread condemnation, took to Twitter Monday to complain about her ouster and seek cash to help with her newfound unemployment.
In her fundraising post, she claimed her former employer “squealed at pressure from leftist CNN, which apparently has anonymous pro-Islam sources at Breitbart.”

McHugh complained that Breitbart was “silencing” her for “telling the truth about Islam,” and declared it’s “time to let the losers on the Left and on the Right know that we will support the truth tellers that they try to silence.”

In response to McHugh’s appeals to raise $10,000 in the wake of her firing for comments that were apparently too incendiary for Breitbart, Twitter reacted appropriately

It's quite possible that what she said is true, but obviously, it's more than likely not.

Apparently, there have been eight confirmed terrorist attacks in GB (not necessarily the UK) since 2010, and even though most of the perpetrators had some association with "Islam," there were also attacks perpetrated by white nationalists as well, the irony being that one victim was apparently an innocent Muslim.

I could give her credit and say that her point was that radical Islamic terrorism is a serious and potentially growing threat in the UK, but given the respective context and analysis, she's not really saying that at all. Her statement is rather demagogic, inaccurate, and thus, most of all, false.

Regardless of her deplorable agenda, she should be fired simply because she doesn't seem to be good at what she does. She seems to be a terrible journalist and a not very bright thinker. I wouldn't have hired her in the first place, let alone fire her.

We live in an age where all the stupid (and/or ignorant) people in this world have readily available platforms, and apparently, some of even get hired as "legitimate" journalists. Social media has only exacerbated this problem and allowed stupid people to band together and gain social and political capital. Stupidity is a root of all evil, and we're certainly living in a golden age of stupidity.

Breitbart’s Traffic Plummets, Advertisers Flee Under Trump Presidency

Breitbart, the right-wing website once helmed by Steve Bannon, now chief strategist to President Donald Trump, skyrocketed into prominence during the 2016 election, but has since been faced with cratering traffic and fleeing advertisers.

According to a new Digiday report, Breitbart has seen a sharp decline — of nearly 90% — in the number of advertisers on its site:

There were just 26 brands appearing on Breitbart in May, down from a high of 242 in March, according to MediaRadar, which tracks ads on websites. Many conservative sites, including Townhall, The Blaze and National Review, have also had declines, although those declines are much less pronounced than Breitbart, according to MediaRadar.

As Digiday notes, the “decline also coincides with boycotts aimed at getting advertisers to stop running ads on the site.” Per Sleeping Giants, a Twitter account tracking companies that have stopped advertising on Breitbart, counts 2,200 companies as having ceased to advertise on the website.

News that Breitbart’s advertisers have plummeted 90% in three months follows a Vanity Fair report that the website’s traffic has cratered since President Trump’s inauguration.

At the height of its popularity, Breitbart boasted 45 million unique monthly visitors, with more than two billion pageviews in 2016, according to a post written on the website.

By January, Breitbart was the 45th most trafficked U.S. website, surpassing “Fox News (#47), Huffington Post (#50), Washington Post (#53), and Buzzfeed (#64).”

A month later, per Vanity Fair, the website celebrated its ascension to 29th place in the Alexa.com rankings, beating out PornHub and ESPN.

But just a couple of months later, Breitbart plummeted from the top of the traffic rankings, falling to 281st place by the end of May.

The steep drop has not been experienced by websites Breitbart was just months ago proud to call rivals: “Fox News is the 64th most-trafficked site in the country. Huffington Post is at 60. Buzzfeed is at 50. The Washington Post, on the strength of a series of eye-popping scoops, is at 41.”

Another fascinating nugget from the Vanity Fair piece: Breitbart’s cratering traffic could have something to do with a “decline in the number of times Breitbart stories receive a link from Matt Drudge.”

Receiving a coveted link on the Drudge Report “can fuel an entire month’s worth of web traffic,” but since Bannon’s departure from Breitbart, the website has struggled to maintain a steady flow of Drudge links.

Maybe after reading the report Matt Drudge will throw Breitbart a bone — but with a sudden dearth of advertisers, it appears Breitbart suffers from more salient problems than day-to-day traffic woes.
