Shabazz Palaces - "32 leaves dipped in blackness making clouds forming altered carbon"

Now here's a second act: guy from a laidback 1990s hip-hop collective returns to his Seattle roots, swaps his previous outfit's jazz samples and major-key optimism for blasted beats and ominous melodic tics, and ends up somewhere between vintage Def Jux and the stoned stutter-step of Brainfeeder associates like Flying Lotus and the Gaslamp Killer. Former Digable Planets member (!!!!) Ishamel Butler's Shabazz Palaces project is more than a little weird, which is why Gonjasufi's reveal in last week's Guest List column that he and Butler are cousins wasn't so surprising.

It's hard to imagine "32 leaves dipped in blackness making clouds forming altered carbon" rolling off the tongues of radio DJs, but the song is a good introduction to what Shabazz Palaces is about. Specifically: Butler spitting air-tight rhymes about throwing hot sauce on cabbage and pouring out Chablis with menace, over a bass-heavy beat that might be described as a "trunk rattler" if it didn't sound more intent on blowing up your entire ? car. Meanwhile, uneasy tones weave all around, like aftermath from the track's skull-shattering opening snare hits. Eerie ? ; super-promising, too.
