The "Chotto Mario na 3DS Present Campaign" kicks off in Japan.

Nintendo wants the 3DS to succeed so badly that, now, they're literally going to give the system away.

As part of today's "Nintendo Direct" 3DS press event, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata announced the "Chotto Mario na 3DS Present Campaign." It's a promotion taking place in Japan as 2011 comes to a close, and it's encouraging 3DS game sales – if Japanese gamers buy two or more Nintendo 3DS titles during this Christmas season then they can log on to Japan's Club Nintendo site and enter a giveaway. The prize? 3000 3DS systems.

Seriously, 3000 different units will be given away. Each one is uniquely designed, too, in one of three styles – 1000 units painted to resemble Princess Peach's pretty pink dress, another 1000 made to look like Mario's classic overalls outfit and a final 1000 decked out like a Super Mushroom.

Which one would you pick?

Even if entrants don't score one of the 3000 3DS systems, though, they'll still walk away winners – because anyone who even enters the competition will get to download the new 3D Classics: Kid Icarus game for free.

If the Ambassador program and drastic price cut a couple of months ago hadn't already convinced you, this latest promotion should. Nintendo's hellbent on making the 3DS a success.

The only question that remains is how Nintendo's other divisions around the globe will respond. Will gamers in the United States get a chance to win the same special systems? Will Europe's Club Nintendo host an equivalent program? We can only hope and wait for confirmation right now. (And start saving up extra cash for the inevitable eBay auctions of these rare collectible systems.)
