I'm gon address the fact that a lot of neo soul artists don't like to be called "neo soul" because they feel like it's a marketing tool or that it places them in a box. I feel like the point of making music is to be heard, regardless of whether you're considered mainstream or not. My argument is that neo soul artists should roll with the name. Why stick to plain "soul" music and attach yourself to what's already considered by most a genre that's held down mostly by the 60's and 70's?? Of course, that doesn't mean black people should stop making soul music or forget about that title but let's be real. 60's and 70's soul is different than what was and is currently being produced late 90's - 10's for the simple fact that with the emergence of neo soul, other genres were blended in and created something noticeably different than Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and the likes. How do you expect your fans to find you if you don't know what genre you're in? Sure, you would rather be labeled "soul" but that's just about as ambiguious as saying ? it and fusing every rock-n-roll artist (regardless of specific genre) in history under the umbrella labeled "rock"?? For example, yes, metal and punk are at their roots what we can all agree to call rock-n-roll, but they are two different sounds within the genre. Let's face it --- neo soul has a specific sound. I think neo soul ? itself over by bucking the name of the genre. If I didn't actually LOVE this ? , I wouldn't waste so much of my time scrounging the internet for neo soul artists I've never heard of and would probably never hear otherwise.
