Actress Marcia Wallace, best known for her roles as The Simpsons' cynical fourth grade school teacher Mrs. Edna Krabappel and The Bob Newhart Show's wisecracking secretary Carol Kester, has died at the age of 70.

“I was tremendously saddened to learn this morning of the passing of the brilliant and gracious Marcia Wallace,” producer Al Jean said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. “She was beloved by all at The Simpsons and we intend to retire her irreplaceable character.”

"Earlier we had discussed a potential storyline in which a character passed away,” Jean continued. “This was not Marcia’s Edna Krabappel. Marcia’s passing is unrelated and again, a terrible loss for all who had the pleasure of knowing her.”

After winning stardom for her role on The Bob Newhart Show, Wallace made the leap to voice acting in animated shows, including Darkwing Duck and Captain Planet and the Planeteers. She won the Emmy as outstanding voice actress in 1992 for her performance as Springfield Elementary School's chain-smoking, sardonic Mrs. Krabappel.

She penned an autobiography in 2004 titled Don’t Look Back, We’re Not Going That Way, which recalled her battle with breast cancer and her husband's death.
