At the moment the PS4 is slightly weak on its multimedia features, due to the lack of MP3 playback capabilities and other gaps here and there. Turns out that Sony is looking into expanding its consoles’ media capabilities, as revealed by a career opportunity ad seeking a Software Engineer for the Sony Computer Entertainment Europe R&D Department.

"You will be working on development and maintenance of a suite of multimedia applications developed by SCEE R&D’s Network Team."

"The role involves design and implementation of new elements, or improvements to the application. This will involve gathering requirements from project stakeholders worldwide, as well as creating design documentation and implementation."

The ad also lists experience on game consoles as a requirement, and ability to “review, debug and enhance already produced code,” which indicates that the multimedia suite is most probably already being worked on.

While we don’t know the exact nature of the suite of apps (the term “suite.” though, indicates that there should be more than one application for multiple purposes), we can hope that it will finally include MP3 playback support, and possibly support for video files as well. The fact that SCEE R&D Network Team is involved may also mean that the application suite will have online features.

Of course we should consider this a rumor until officially announced by Sony, and you can definitely expect to read all about it here on DualShockers as soon as that will happen.
