Madison police officer shoots black teenager following altercation Friday

Hundreds 'die-in' at library for #BlackLivesMatter protest

After an unnamed Madison Police Department officer shot teenager Anthony “Tony” Robinson in an apartment on the 1100 block of Williamson Street Friday evening, a crowd of nearly 150 gathered at the scene to protest what they said was another example of racial injustice.

Madison Police Chief Mike Koval said a police officer shot and killed a 19-year-old black man Friday evening, according to footage from a press conference published by Channel 3000. The family of the victim identified him as Anthony Robinson.

Koval said MPD received a report that Robinson was responsible for a recently committed battery. The first responding officer arrived at the apartment the man had entered and heard a "disturbance" coming from inside. The officer then forced his way into the building, where Robinson allegedly assaulted him.

"In the context of mutual combat in that sense, the officer did draw his revolver and subsequently shot the subject," Koval said.

At the time of the press conference, police did not know if Robinson had a weapon, although an initial investigation ruled out the presence of a gun.

Koval said the officer immediately aided Robinson with CPR, along with help from backup officers. He was taken to a hospital, where he died of the gunshot wounds.

The responding officer was knocked down by a blow to the head, but Koval said at the press conference, the officer would be treated and ultimately released.

State law mandates that an independent investigation be conducted. MPD froze the scene until the state Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation arrived.

Officers at the scene said DOJ investigators had arrived before 11:30 p.m
    .

"This is completely their oversight," Koval said. "We will only supplement their needs as they request it."

He said MPD will not have an instrumental role in the investigation.

"In light of so [many] things that have happened not just across this country, but in our own community, it's understandable that the reaction at the scene amidst some of our citizens is extremely volatile, emotional and upsetting," Koval said.

Demonstrators arrived on Williamson Street shortly after the incident, where they remained for several hours, chanting, singing and praying for Robinson's family.

Shortly before midnight, Robinson's grandmother, Sharon Irwin, and aunt, Lorien Carter, addressed the crowd.

He [Robinson] wouldn't hurt a fly," Irwin said. "He was unarmed. Why would you shoot him five times? What happened to your taser gun?"

Carter said family members were not allowed to see Robinson after he was pronounced dead.

"We were told he was evidence," Carter said. "He wasn't referred to as 'his son' or 'your son,' just 'evidence.'"

Protest organizers relocated the crowd to the City/County Building, where they said police were holding two demonstrators who had been detained from the scene earlier in the evening.

Police locked the doors to the building after half the group had already entered. They staged a sit-in along the halls of the building while the others chanted outside and knocked on the doors to the building.

The two protesters were released before 1:30 a.m., and the combined group of roughly 150 dissipated.

Irwin said she believed her grandson's death was part of a larger national issue and similar to cases in Ferguson, Mo. and Miami Gardens, Fla.

"This can't go on anymore," Irwin said. "It's going on across the United States and it's ridiculous. You don't have a license to ? . You have a license to protect, and that's not what I'm seeing."

Above all, family members asked for nonviolent demonstrations, like the one Friday night, to continue.

"Protest peacefully, please," Carter asked. "Stand up, but stand up peacefully.
    "

Organizers: Take to the street and "force justice" for officer-involved shooting victim Tony Robinson

MADISON(WKOW) -- Members of Young Gifted & Black Coalition hosted a gathering of local activists Saturday morning for a debriefing and planning meeting in the wake of Friday night's deadly officer-involved shooting on Williamson St.

One organizer told the crowd of 300 inside the YWCA on Latham Road that "We are Ferguson" after the shooting, referring to Ferguson, Missouri, where 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed by a police officer on august 9.
A grand jury decided not to indict officer Darren Wilson in Brown's death and Wilson was the U.S. Department of Justice also cleared Wilson of civil rights violations in the shooting.

Organizers at the Saturday morning meeting in Madison spoke about the urban rebellion in Ferguson after Brown's shooting and said Madison should respond, urging those in attendance to reinforce that an unarmed 19-year-old was shot by police. They asked the crowd to take to the street and "force justice" for Tony Robinson.

Those organizers also said Madison East students will walk out of class Monday in protest of Robinson's shooting.

Madison police say an officer shot and killed a man after responding to calls and hearing what the officer thought was a disturbance in an apartment at 1125 Williamson St.

Police have not identified the person shot, but family members tell 27 News it was 19-year-old Tony Robinson.

Police Chief Mike Koval told 27 News Friday night there's no indication the victim had a gun.

The Department of Criminal Investigation of the Wisconsin Department of Justice is handling the investigation into the shooting.

At noon Saturday, pastor and attorney Everett Mitchell is hosting a prayer at Christ the Solid Rock Baptist Church on Badger Road in Madison, for those who want to come and pray after the shooting.

And at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, Dane County Boys & Girls Club CEO Michael Johnson is hosting a community meeting at Fountain of Life Church which will include the groups Justified Anger Coalition, The Conversation Mixtape, The African American Council of Churches and the Nehemiah Center for Urban Leadership. Johnson says all local leaders and the community can come to discuss Robinson's shooting.

I wonder how long they think they can get away with ? on an entire race of people and telling them it's raining.

The pigs having been getting away w/ this ? towards are community since the 1930s.. And unfortunately they will continue to get away w/ it because that got DA's & county prosecutors on their side.. The pig unions have these politicians shook & scared to do anything.. They also have media on their side.. who quick to put out there false police narratives attacking the black victim of their oppression.. The whole "Justice" system is setup for them to continue to unfortunatly ? and then demonize us.. plus there a lot people in Amerikkka who agree with those pigs & think pigs are justified in picking us off...

You make it sound like the system is unbreakable

And you make it sound like change is coming....who's going to police the police.

Like you said, social media changed the game. We used to have to wait on the media to set the agenda..now with Facebook/Twitter and the internet as a whole, the media plays catch up after the fact. Couple that with the fact that everybody has a camera on their phone now, ? ain't going under the radar like it used to. Something's gotta give. The status quo is becoming more and more unsustainable.

I don't think this is so much a racial issue here, Madison has a trigger happy police force. There has been multiple cop shootings here for the past couple of years. They killed an unarmed white guy a couple years back which is why we have an out of state independent investigation law now. That cop also had a history of being quick to shoot and basically getting off scott free.
