MADISON (WKOW) -- Andrea Irwin, the mother of Tony Robinson, says she will not stop until she gets justice for her son.
Irwin spoke to 27 News after hearing that Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne would not file charges against Officer Matt Kenny, the Madison police officer who shot and killed her son in March.
"I cried, I'm upset," Irwin said of her reaction when she learned the decision. "Like, it hurts to know the man is gonna get away with, the DA of my city decided that my son deserved to die."
Irwin told 27 News Tuesday night that she believes Officer Kenny's guilt or innocence should have been left up to a jury. She said she does not consider this is justice and this is not the end of the investigation in to her son's death.
"I'm absolutely not gonna let this go," Irwin said. "I'm gonna go on whatever avenue I can. My lawyers have all the information, we will be talking in the morning, I know a big question is: yes, we will file a civil suit."
Irwin said she was encouraged by the number of young people who called for justice for Tony Robinson after the decision was released. She says the march from Williamson Street, where Tony was killed, to the Capitol, was organized by Tony's friends.
"They give me hope that this won't die away, they won't quit," Irwin said. "They are just as passionate about this as I am. And I see it in them, their energy, these children are going to take this experience and move on to do big things. And be people that will make change and will do things right by the next generation."
Irwin said she will be reviewing the investigation and reading documents with her attorney, but she will not look at any of the photos or videos released. Irwin said she is going to remember her son the way she wants everyone else to: as a goofy, loving son and big brother.
"Justice will come," Irwin said. "We will get justice. Do not think for one second that this is the end because it's not. It's the beginning. I will not stop. This is my life and I live and breathe this and until the day I get justice for my son-- this is not over." -
