of course, the background of the attacker DOES kind of undermine his claims of peace and love...

North Korea: Knife attack on U.S. ambassador was ‘deserved punishment’
North Korea hailed a slashing attack against the U.S. ambassador in Seoul as “deserved punishment” for U.S. participation in military exercises on the Korean Peninsula, adding possible new tensions Thursday amid the political fallout after the assault.

The brief dispatch by North Korea’s official news agency did not assert any claims of responsibility or suggest ties to the knife-wielding man who lunged at Ambassador Mark Lippert at a public event Wednesday, leaving the diplomat with wounds across his face and hands.

But the provocative message carried by the Korean Central News Agency reflected sharpened rhetoric and optics — including images of the North’s leader Kim Jong Un conferring with commanders — in response to the joint military drills that began earlier this week.

The North’s state-run Korean Central News Agency called the attack a “knife shower of justice” and “deserved punishment for warmonger United States,” according to translations from news agencies including South Korea’s Yonhap.

There was no immediate comment from Washington on the North Korea statement.

But Secretary of State John F. Kerry, speaking in Saudi Arabia, denounced the “vicious attack” and said such violence will not sway U.S. policies.

“The United States of America will never be intimidated or deterred by threats, or by anyone who harms any American diplomat,” said Kerry, who spoke by phone earlier with Lippert.

“Doing well and in great spirits,” Lippert, a former assistant secretary of defense and adviser to President Obama, tweeted from the Seoul hospital where he was being treated after the gruesome knife attack that took place as he was sitting down for breakfast at a performing arts center in downtown Seoul.

The ambassador, who’s been in his post since last summer, said he, his wife, baby son and beloved basset hound Grigsby were all “deeply moved by the support.” The attack happened as Lippert was preparing to give a lecture about prospects for peace on the divided Korean Peninsula.

“Will be back ASAP to advance US-ROK alliance!,” Lippert tweeted, referring to the initials of the country’s official name, the Republic of South Korea.

Pictures and television reports released after the attack showed a stunned Lippert bleeding heavily from his head and hand at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, across the street from the U.S. embassy. Police said he was attacked with a 10-inch knife. Reports said the 55-year-old attacker yelled: “No war. The two Koreas should be unified.”

State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf, however, said a joint investigation is underway into the attack. “We cannot speculate on a motive at this time,” said Harf.

Surgeon Jung Nam-sik of Yonsei University Hospital, speaking at a televised briefing, said 80 stitches were needed to repair Lippert’s ? wound, which was more than four inches long and one inch deep. The cut did not affect his nerves or salivary gland, the surgeon said. Lippert also suffered significant knife wounds to his left wrist while apparently struggling to push off his assailant.

The ambassador is expected to be able to use his hand after four weeks of treatment, but due to tendon damage, a more complete recovery will take longer because of the loss of sensation in his little finger, his doctors said.

“He’s as good as can be expected, his spirit is strong. He tends to soldier on, or as he said to me, sailor on,” said Kerry in a reference to Lippert’s Navy service.

Obama called Lippert to “wish him the very best for a speedy recovery,” National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said.

Police officials said the assailant, identified as Kim Ki-jong, was immediately apprehended. He is a member of the Korean Council for Reconciliation and Cooperation, which organized the seminar, police said.

Kim grabbed Lippert just as he was about to eat breakfast and slashed him about three times toward the right side of his face and his left wrist, reports said.

In July 2010, Kim threw a piece of concrete at the Japanese ambassador to South Korea and received a two-year suspended jail sentence, Yonhap reported.

Since arriving in Seoul last summer, Lippert has established himself as a down-to-earth, approachable ambassador. Unusually, he walks the short distance from his official residence to the embassy most days, greeting Koreans along the way.

He can also be seen early in the morning and at night walking his basset hound in the area of central Seoul where his residence, the embassy and the Sejong Center are all located. He has even set up a Twitter account for his hound Grigsby, @grigsbybasset, where he posts pictures of himself and the dog around Seoul.

Lippert and his wife, Robyn, had their first baby in Seoul earlier this year and gave the boy a Korean middle name — he’s called James William Sejun Lippert — which was widely reported in Korean news media.

But despite Lippert’s efforts at outreach, the American presence in Korea remains controversial. There are more than 25,000 U.S. troops in the South, guarding against the threat from North Korea, and some Koreans resent their continued presence 60 years after the end of the Korean War.

Damn, North Korea talks more reckless about America then any other nation on Earth. Iran is the closest. Considering the Youtube videos showing NK blowing up the White House with a nuclear explosion and them killing 40 South Korean soldiers just 3 years ago, I think NK on the low is looking for a confrontation. Of course they would lose, but they been talking pretty cocky lately.

Why are you surprised.....? You forgot about this 2014 world poll huh....

US is the greatest threat to world peace: poll

The United States is the greatest threat to world peace. That’s the finding of an end-of-the- year, WIN/Gallup International survey of people in 65 countries.

--Don't be surprised, America is one of the chief sponsors of terrorism in the world. Few nations, if any, support bloodthirsty imperialism and destruction of mankind the way the United States of America does.

You always bring up these stupid polls but they are not based on anything substantive

? . Educated people around the world see the facts and read the news. And over and over again, people around the world have reached the conclusion America is one of the biggest terrorist nations on the face of the planet.

America helped ? millions in Vietnam over communism, close to a million killed in Iraq for no good reason, and America supports the evil terrorism of Israel....shall I go on? You don't have to like the polls but if you travel the world, you should know what people REALLY say about America. People come here for the money and good opportunities, but from a moral point of view, America's foreign policy is quite evil.

And who makes the determination of what is a rational opinion.....you?? HAHA....it is VERY rational to consider the actions of America right now and historically, overall, to be one of terrorism and supportive of terrorism.

Any rational person would consider the United States supportive of terrorism when it gives an apartheid nation like Israel bombs and bullets to oppress the Palestinians and steal land, water and natural gas from its neighbors. America killed and left crippled millions to stop the spread of communism, and destabilized plenty of nations for corporate and economic reasons. The list of terrorist actions by America historically and even presently is a very long and shameful one.

But you don't make the decision on whether an opinion is rational or not. Most of my friends are educated, well read and rational, and most have drawn the same conclusion I have and that people around the world in those polls have.

Is it NOT rational to say America is a nation that supports terrorism, via Israel and its actions worldwide, including the disastrous war in Iraq which crippled and killed many innocents? You do know that the cancer rate in Iraq exploded after America dropped cancer causing bombs all over the place right?

A small example as to why America is called a terrorist nation or international threat by MANY around the world

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/20/iraq-war-anniversary-birth-defects-cancer_n_2917701.html

Ten years after the start of the U.S. invasion in Iraq, doctors in some of the Middle Eastern nation's cities are witnessing an abnormally high number of cases of cancer and birth defects. Scientists suspect the rise is tied to the use of depleted uranium and white phosphorus in military assaults.

Jamail recounts meeting Dr. Samira Alani, a doctor in the city of Fallujah focusing on the issue of birth defects.

She said it's common now in Fallujah for newborns to come out with massive multiple systemic defects, immune problems, massive central nervous system problems, massive heart problems, skeletal disorders, babies being born with two heads, babies being born with half of their internal organs outside of their bodies, cyclops babies literally with one eye -- really, really, really horrific nightmarish types of birth defects.

--And people wonder why terror groups come from the Middle East......? One reason could be their children are being born with one eye or two heads. The same problems are happening in Vietnam, where America used tons of chemical weapons and unexploded bombs are STILL going off in 2015.

israel has harshly punished it's enemies but it's not a terrorist state because it does not have an intention is changing the political structure of other nations. it just wants to be safe and secure that's it. That being said israel reacts to aggression strongly sometimes too strongly, america typically supports israel but not it's every harsh over reaction in fact for decades we have been trying to keep the peace between the palestinians and isreal. It's the arab muslims in the area that refuse to live in peace.

The iraq war was a mistake and our leaving iraq so soon was an even greater one but it was never the intention of the USA to ? innocents for no reason or to enforce our political system on them. We simply wanted to remove a dictator ( GRANTED we used ? excuses to do this) and give the people the freedom to choose their own system.

terrorism is the use of fear/death to bring about a desired change in a government by force. we removed a government by force by the change in government was in the hands of the iraqi people

Israel wants to do more then just "be safe". It also wants to take more and more Palestinian land, and even take more of the water that should belong to a Palestinian state. In fact, Israel constantly shoots at Palestinian fisherman if they dare to fish off their waters too far off land, how shameless can one get? AH YEAH I forgot, they need the Palestinian coastline to take natural gas and oil. Taking resources from an occupied people is ILLEGAL according to international law. A nation doesn't just want to be "safe and secure" if it also is stealing land and building illegal settlements, come on. America under Obama has given Israel MORE AID then ANY other president in American history, minus maybe Richard Nixon. SHAMEFUL but nothing that surprises me.

As far as Iraq and Vietnam, both wars were terrorist actions without a doubt, fought for no good reason. Neither nation posed a national security risk, and we still used hundreds of tons of bombs to drop on those nations, killing millions and crippling ? knows how many. Cancer causing bombs being dropped in nations that didn't pose a security risk sounds like terrorism to me. Glad you admitted the ? excuses we used, that makes America's actions even more horrible and disgusting.

Why are you surprised.....? You forgot about this 2014 world poll huh....

US is the greatest threat to world peace: poll

    http://nypost.com/2014/01/05/us-is-the-greatest-threat-to-world-peace-poll/

The United States is the greatest threat to world peace. That’s the finding of an end-of-the- year, WIN/Gallup International survey of people in 65 countries.

--Don't be surprised, America is one of the chief sponsors of terrorism in the world. Few nations, if any, support bloodthirsty imperialism and destruction of mankind the way the United States of America does.

Opinions and feelings based on ignorace, jealousy and just pure stupidity. I'd wager.

You still don't get it people can say/ feel what ever. But feelings are not a basis for rational opinions.

A rational opinions is created when all the available facts are known and people are educated on their implications. The problem with those kinds of mass polls is that the people answer based on emotions and lack of indepth facts. Not to mention that their is an intrinsic bias and conflict of interest that will be revealed by the nature of the question and the person being questioned

Logic decides if a opinion is rational or not, i don't know your friends but they most likely are not an accurate representation of the kinds of people that answered that poll.

israel has harshly punished it's enemies but it's not a terrorist state because it does not have an intention is changing the political structure of other nations. it just wants to be safe and secure that's it.

Israel is grabbing the land because the palestinians have proven themselves to be unwilling to live in peace even if the palestinians get their own state for isreal to be safe it must have military control of the west bank and gaza. The palestinians did this to themselves they could have had peace a long time ago and they rejected it. CURRENTLY the palestinians don't have a state so what are they going to do with the profits from oil???? buy weapons to make war with israel. I don't blame israel for taking the oil as for the water if palestinians want control of their natural resources then stop being aggressive then israel would have no excuse to sell them their own water at full price.

vietnam has fought for a very good reason, the south vietnamese asked us to help and we wanted to help because the spread of communism had to be stopped. The results of war are always bad in human lives but the long term outcomes of american wars are typically good.

Lord have mercy on your soul if you believe the Vietnam War was fought for good reason. Thank ? Americans protested to end that war, otherwise another thousand or so in Vietnam each year would be killed or blown up.

As far as Israel grabbing that land, it's not theirs to begin with. And if you believe might makes right, then Christians and Jews in the region will continue to be targets of kidnappings and beheadings to be driven out of land in the region. Maybe worse, your attitude certainly doesn't help the reputation of die hard Christians like yourself who excuse everything Israel does.

After all, might makes right huh??

Yes the usa fought the veitnam war for good reasons, we wanted the stop the spread of communism which we believed to be a totally evil system and south veitnam asked for our help and that's how we got involved further justifying our involvement.

The land is belongs to israel it was PROMISED to them by the british after the british defeated the OTTOMAN EMPIRE. After ww2 the jews finally had a home, israel was finally reborn with the co sign of the U.N and the U.K. Had the arab muslims not been so aggressive israel would be an even smaller nation. but the jews soon learned that in order to stay safe they had to take land because the arabs would not stop invading them every couple of years. The stupid thing is that the arabs keep getting washed the ? up even when they had the support of the soviet union they still could not win.

The arabs muslims are in a lose lose situation the more they ? christians the more it becomes worse for them the western world is turning against islam period, and the funny thing is these fools are killing themselves off more than america and israel could ever do.

you always go on and on about reputation and the people in the region liking us. ? ? that they don't have to like us and they are not going to ever like us. The religion they follow is against being friends with non-muslims unless you are trying to convert them AND AT THIS POINT it's too late to look for love anyway.

instead of going on, you MIGHT want to pause there and check these numbers

America helped the south Vietnamese govt ? a whole bunch of people, including civilians using bombs that are exploding in Vietnam till this day. If you mean America didn't ? by itself millions in Vietnam, then I'll concede that.

Still though, the numbers don't look good for America considering it wasn't a necessary war for America at all

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_War_casualties#Deaths_caused_by_the_American_military

18.2 million gallons of Agent Orange (Dioxin) was sprayed by the U.S. military over more than 10% of Southern Vietnam,[29] as part of the U.S. herbicidal warfare program, Operation Ranch Hand, during the Vietnam War from 1961 to 1971. Vietnam's government claimed that 400,000 people were killed or maimed as a result of after effects, and that 500,000 children were born with birth defects.[30]

--That's a lot of children with birth defects.....smh

well, what i am really referring to is "the Vietnam War didn't ? millions of people" period

as far as the necessary thing, in retrospect this is true, but at the time i imagine you could make a much stronger case for it (as well as for prosecuting it more effectively)

It was not just Nam, they campaigned in Southeastern Asia in the 50's and essentially committed genocide in order to stop the spread of communism--or so they thought. I've read the overall numbers are that high.

Zombie, how did the first Indochina war or Vietnam benefit America?

this seems like an odd thesis unless we're tossing in the Korea War and giving America the blame for anything done by a Western nation in Asia
