HARARE, Zimbabwe — Zimbabweans watched in disbelief Sunday as President Robert Mugabe, who they thought was going to resign, instead delivered a meandering speech on state television that made clear the 93-year-old leader has no plans to leave power.

In less than a week, Mugabe has survived both a military takeover and the largest public protests in the country’s history, reaffirming his uncanny ability to navigate the country’s political tides.

Mugabe said the criticisms leveled against his government “were inescapable.” But he suggested that he could make the necessary reforms to satisfy his critics, a doubtful contention given the overwhelming opposition to his rule. That opposition was underscored on Sunday, hours before his speech, when his own party dismissed him as leader. The party, ZANU-PF, also told Mugabe that he must resign by noon Monday or face impeachment proceedings.

Those actions, unimaginable only a week ago, added to the groundswell of public support for the ejection of the world’s oldest head of state.

“He is senile and obviously his faculties were beginning to deteriorate,” said Christopher Mutsvangwa, a member of the ZANU-PF central committee, which voted to oust Mugabe from the party.

Mugabe was placed under house arrest by the military Tuesday, though the generals insisted they weren’t conducting a coup. Huge protests followed and it seemed by Sunday evening that events would finally bring about Mugabe’s resignation. The state broadcaster announced that he would address the nation. Zimbabweans gathered by their televisions. Some news outlets reported that he was about to resign. People discussed how they would celebrate the beginning of a new era.

But Mugabe did not resign. He spoke obliquely about the country’s economic challenges and disaffection with some of his party’s “rules and procedures.” He said those matters would be “settled and discussed” at next month’s party congress.

It was a speech that prompted the same questions about Mugabe that Zimbabweans have asked for years. Was he showing signs of senility? Or was he displaying the same shrewd, stubborn ability to defy his critics that has kept him afloat for decades?

Didn't he kick out all the white people?

    Yup. The farmers.

Thus he is demonized by the west.

A black man who did not appear to be bought off and exercised power as he saw fit.

Can't have that......(follow the money (funding))

i was in Zimbabwe last month , and alot of white people still live there , soooooo

    YA1OZ.gif

because after they kicked them out, they realized they didn't have the people with decades of expertise to work the land so production dropped. The government didn't have anything to replace this gap so they went from a surplus of food to having to import food in Zimbabwe. So for the last several years they've been inviting white farmers back to help.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_reform_in_Zimbabwe

Don't send me wiki pages about my country dawg that downright insulting

and lol at Zimbabweans not having expertise lmao , My Uncles and Cousins and Grand Parents own land and do a lot of Farming whether it Maize, Tobacco or Sugarcane and are damn good at it too , like a lot other Zimbabweans who are just as smart and as have expertise.

White people just don't want to do business with the current government because they would rather deal with their own , so please don't insult me by saying whites have better expertise yada yada because that false.

so why did his advisers tell him not to kick out the white farmers because it would destroy the economy, which it did?

    you operating under confirmation bias

    In a nutshell

The Lancester House treaty of 1980 with Margeret Thatcher’s govt stipulated that Her majesty’s crown owed us compensation for colonization and the brutality of the british empire for the last 100 years.

In which the British government was to pay the newly formed Zimbabwe an agreed amount in millions of dollars for the next 30 years (1980 - 2010) , in exchange there would be no retribution for descendants of the white settlers and ther was reconciliation.

But the problem was a population of a 100 000 whites still owned vast amounts of land , which they had forcibly taken from black people who actually had claims to those lands (they had been sent to ghettos and areas where the land was arid) , and some who fought in the what with the promise of getting their ancestors’ land back. Its kinda unfair that say a white family of 5 owns land the size of Queens whilst 1000s of black families live in squalor. People were asking for the whites to be fair here and give up some of the lands but they refused.

Everything was kinda quiet and people didn’t really complain because economically we where doing well with the British government still payin what was owed, but regime change in the UK, when Tony Blair’s government won the 97 election and refused to honor that agreement because they said it was the Tory Government that struck that deal not Labour, thats when ? went down hill and land grabs started happening.

They land redistribution was forced, rushed and really not well thought out, lead to unnecessary white deaths and sanctions and that ? us.

That’s the problem they don’t....mugabe was the last opposition to the west....it’s propaganda showing people happy in the streets....these people want a western life so bad they are going to give up everything to the Chinese and Europeans.....

This is similar to ghadafi being assassinated and overthrown and citizens being happy....
