Florida Preschooler's Show and Tell: Bags of ?
3-year-old found with baggies of marijuana at school

A 3-year-old North Florida preschooler brought a very special show-and-tell item to school Monday: a couple bags of marijuana.

The Lake City toddler was found with two baggies containing less than 20 grams worth of ? , according to firstcoastnews.com.

When the youngster showed it to another student, the student told a teacher who tipped off Columbia County Sheriff's deputies.

When deputies searched the preschooler's home, no drugs were found. The boy's mother said she had no idea where the ? came from, but the boy is developmentally disabled and rides a bus everyday.

The Department of Children and Families has opened an investigation, but there have been no arrests so far.

LAKE CITY, Fla., Sept. 28 (UPI) -- The mother of a 3-year-old Florida boy says she has no idea where he got the marijuana he brought to his preschool this week, authorities say.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office said the child, who school officials say is developmentally disabled, won't be charged but the investigation continues into how he got his hands on the illegal weed.

Police say the boy showed the marijuana to a classmate Monday at Niblack Elementary School in Lake City, who then told their teacher. School officials found he had two small plastic bags holding less than 20 grams of marijuana.

Jacksonville's WJXT-TV reported the boy was sent home with his mother after he told authorities the ? came from his father.

The mother denied knowing where the marijuana originated, and a search of her home produced no illegal drugs. She suggested her son may have gotten the marijuana from a neighbor's house where he plays, the TV station said.

"I don't think this kid knew what he had on him -- that he knew it was marijuana, knew that it was illegal, knew it was a dangerous drug," a sheriff's office spokesman said. "If it came from home, if it came from the street, if it came from the school bus, we just don't know where it came from at this point."

The case of a 3-year-old Lake City boy who took marijuana to prekindergarten on Monday has been turned over to the Department of Children and Families and will not be prosecuted.

Columbia County Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Ed Seifert said the marijuana was discovered when the little boy showed it to a classmate, and the classmate notified a teacher at Niblack Elementary School. The marijuana was in two small plastic bags with a combined weight of less than 20 grams.

The boy's mother and deputies were summoned to the school, and deputies then followed the mother and child home, where their home was searched. No illegal drugs were found in the home, according to the Sheriff's Office.

“This child has some developmental disability issues and was unable to tell us how or where he got the marijuana, and it's possible he may not even know,” Seifert said. “Of course we are not going to prosecute this case, but we did turn it over to the Department of Children and Families to follow up and make sure the home is safe for the child.”

The boy returned to school without incident Tuesday.
