King of NY is nothing more than a popularity contest to most NYers. For example in 94 u could've found a considerable amount of ppl that would've said:
Nas > BIG
Illmaitc > RTD
but BIG went 2x plat while it took Nas nearly 2 years to go gold...hence BIG was named King of NY. Just like when Jay & Nas went at it back in 01. Nas won the battle (well @ least to most ppl even though it still gets debated here...but thats another thread), but Jay never really lost that title b/c he was still more commercially viable than Nas.
Then it was 50...so u get the drift -
