Mitt Romney scrambled to do some damage control after he suggested it was time to "hang" President Obama in a speech in New Hampshire Friday night.

The former Massachusetts governor and probable 2012 presidential candidate was speaking at a dinner when he said in response to an attendee's question, "Reagan came up with this great thing about the 'misery index' and he hung that around Jimmy Carter's neck and that had a lot to do with Jimmy Carter losing. Well we're going to have to hang the 'Obama Misery Index' around his neck."

Romney went on to describe how people in the U.S. are suffering because of high fuel prices, foreclosures and bankruptcies.

"We're going to hang him with that," Romney said before catching himself and adding, "so to speak, metaphorically."

Seeming to know that he had just severely misspoke, Romney then added, "You have to be careful these days."

On Saturday morning, his spokesperson Andrea Saul told CNN in an email that any stories of the remarks were "an exaggeration."

"It is not what the governor meant and that was very clear in what he actually said. It's a ridiculous exaggeration of his actual comments," she said.

Romney, who announced he was forming an exploratory committee earlier this month, is considered a possible favorite to win the GOP nomination.

When asked if he would participate in the Republicans' first debate in South Carolina next week, he answered "Stay tuned," the Wall Street Journal reported.

Romney's spokesperson did not immediately return an email request for comment to The News.

Yeah, I don't think Romney really wants to lynch the President or anything, but this is quite the ? up. Watch your mouth Mitt.

saying something that is 'quite the ? up' is enough to knock you out of presidential contention. See Barbour, Haley

This could be more interesting since Barbour was never really a contender anyway.

yeah I guess. Barbour pretty much sealed his fate when he said other ? comments. ive always thought romney could get the nomination in 2012. this may change that.

And this is the guy that these idiots are trying to pin their hopes on to "restore America" as they like to put it. In light of this past week's events regarding Obama's birth certificate, it's obvious that we're going to have to deal with this blanket racism all the way up into the next election. When he was senator, no one was raising these accusations of his birth, his religion and his affiliations w/certain people. Romney has had it out for Obama ever since he got elected President. It's unfortunate that this still comes up but when the chips are down the ugliest parts of people come out and Romney is no different

I don't see anything wrong with what he said.

America needs someone to help restore this country's core values.
Things are getting out of hand.

These people are starting to think they are equal.

This country needs more of this happening, I tell ya.

It's funny and disturbing that this sort of talk is seen as a necessity to win the Republican nomination.

LOL, Mittens knew exactly what he was doing saying that. Like Donald Trump, he's trying to get the racist birthers on his side, or the side of the country that still can't get over having a Black president.

It's official, Mittens has no chance to become president now. Mike Huckabee has solidified himself as the frontrunner again. Which must be very depressing for Republicans, hahaha

Guilty conscience kicked in, nothing more. He knew exactly what he was doing, he even laughed about it.

I disagree, I think Romney will be the nominee, and he'll lose because he has a vendetta against charisma. And I don't think this gaff is nearly as bad as some of the crazy things that Huckabee has said.

Who else do the Republicans have? Mitt Romney just shot himself in the foot, and many Republicans haven't forgiven him for creating his borderline "socialist" healthcare plan in Massachusetts. Sarah is a joke, along with Trump, Bachmann, and Cain. Alan West, the Republican who tortured an Iraqi and got discharged from the army because of it, might be their only chance. He seems intelligent but he's Black, so it's unlikely most Republicans will vote for him.

It's been a two man race betweem huckabee and romney, huckabee being the extremist and romney being the moderate. Chamber of Commerce and rest of the business associations prefer romney, teabaggers could go either way depending on whether they lean more toward racism and fundamentalism or prioritize fiscal issues.

These are not dumb crackers. Believe me Romney knows what he says.

Every time they say something like that, they are looking for results or responses from certain segments of the population. I'm sorry to say this but this is just the beginning.
Things are going to get worse. Many whites are removing that cellophane veneer of civility they once had because times are getting rough. They don't know who to blame because politicians will lie to save their hides and conceal the truth. Listen to these talk shows like Alex Jones and Glenn Beck and you will everyday common white people spitting venom at everything that ain't white that is in sight.

Black people you better circle the wagons, because the beast is about to come down with great wrath.

At first i didnt take it as something that he meant to say as being racial but now that i think about it these guys know what there saying before they say it. Im quite sure that as he read his speech during rehearsal that it was probably pointed out to him that his comment could be taken as insensitive.

Romney knows that in order to get the nomination he will need to tap into the crazy wing of the Republicans. After seeing how Trump sky rocketed in the polls by talking crazy i think that alot of ppl that are running are gonna now take a page out of that book.

LOL. You do know that there is a lot of white people on that report don't you?

Still doesn't match up to the 600 million killed by you know who. You are the chief champions with a minority population. Talk about prone to violence.

    Where's that report?

how sad. before it was likely racists had to make themselves look not racist in order to win elections.

Today it's politicians who probably aren't that racists have to make themselves look racist in order to win elections.
