"Sound" is basically defined as an oscillation through a medium, which can be heard. So, your teacher was right, if no one/nothing hears it, it wouldn't count as a sound. -

Well, I interpret things as, "Prior to observation/measurement--unless observation/measurement has an impact on the outcome--the state exists, but is merely unknown to the observer.".so does anything really exist unless we are directly observing it?
