If you are under 30 be sure to do a Google or Wikipedia search before you say something stupid that will get tomatoes thrown at you!!!!
? HIT THE STREETS IN THE SUMMER OF 1985!!
Rap has always been really good at telling stories at street level about whats going on. like Chuck D said Rap is the "Ghetto CNN" so when ? hit and things got really violent and crazy it didnt take rap long to respond and morph from mostly party records into really ? gangsta really quickly.
So what was the first GANGSTA RECORD? heres the choices!
WHO: SCHOOLY D
SONG: PSK - What Does It Mean?
YEAR: 1985
REGION: Philly
PRODUCER: JB WEAVER
Factoid: This beat was sampled for the "leave a message" intro on Mary J Blige debut album The 411
The lyrics are really simple but its the first time i can recall a Rap song talking about guns used in the 1st person narrative!
WHO: EAZY - E
SONG: BOYZ N DA HOOD
YEAR: 1987
REGION: Compton, California
PRODUCER: DR Dre
Factoid: The lyrics were written by a 17 year old kid named ICE CUBE
if you are under 30 you probably only know BOYZ N The Hood as a Movie but this was the Hip Hop Classic that started the whole West Coast Gangsta movment!
WHO: ICE-T
SONG: 6 In The Mornin
YEAR: 1986
REGION: Los Angeles, CA
PRODUCER: The Unknown DJ
Factoid: The Title and numerous Lyrics from this song are STILL quoted by west coast rappers to to this day!
A long time ago Ice T was relevant as a rapper before he was on all those CSI type shows playing a cop. dude is a real hustler
WHO: BOOGIE DOWN PRODUCTIONS (KRS ONE and SCOTT LA ROCK)
SONG: 9 MM Goes Bang
YEAR: 1987
REGION: Bronx NY
PRODUCER: Ghost Produced By CED GEE of Ultra Magnetic MC's
Factoid: One of the first rap songs to weave in Jamacian Dancehall in Hip Hop
The whole CRIMINAL MINDED album was Gangsta after the death of DJ Scott Larock KRS - ONE morphed into a different sound of being the "Teacha"

Schooly D was technically the first but the first one that anybody gave a damn about was ice t 6 n the morning
-
Was gonna post PSK. That was definitely one of the first. Those other records were inspired by it.
-
damn every song mentioned is a classic one but PSK inspired 6 in the morning which inspired every other gangsta rap track of the 80's after that so I voted PSK. Damn you took me back...
-
Schooly D was first. Just Ice was 2nd.
-
When I read the thread title PSK was the first song that came to mind.
-
Schoolly D....everybody knows that. He is without a shadow of a doubt the first artist to do a gangsta record....all the REAL artists will even admit to that. Philly!!!!

Schoolly D also made "Gangster Boogie" in 1984. It talks about selling weed. No label would press the record for him at the time, so he pressed them himself, which is why the labels look different on the records.

Here's one that deserves a mention
Girl - Too Short (1985)

But you could bring it all the way back to 1982 if you wanted;
The Message - Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5
