Racial Segregation in Prisons, Let's Talk About It

Was discussing a certain scenario I read about with a poster which is an attempt to quell racially-motivated violence in prisons.

The scenario proposes a statute stating each inmate would have the freedom to choose either to pick a cell with someone of their own race or take a cell with someone of any race. Those that choose to be cellmates with someone of their own race would be working, eating, and participating in recreational activities with only those of their own race. Those that choose the 2nd option would engage in these activities with those from different races. Is racial segregation a viable option in minimizing prison violence?

No. There are racially segregated gangs in prison anyway, so IMO things would not change.

In any survival of the fittest environment, racial segregation is the proper and natural order of things

No. Because blacks will shank and ? blacks too, whites and latinos don't cut their own race any slack either.

Racially segregate the prison and then the cons segregate into gangs or sets like they would on the outside.

People thought that keeping all the Crips in the same block would stop gang violence.....then they found out that Crips warred with Crips harder than they warred with Bloods. They saw this when the cons segregated into blocks and sets.

People gravitate to what makes them comfortable. In unfamiliar surroundings it will most likely be a person of the same race. Its one thing to share a cell but they still have to leave sooner or later. General population ain't havin that and its dangerous not to conform with the majority segregating themselves by choice.

Now if this prison is using this sort of placement from day 1, it might work. I don't think this would work in an established prison. They are too far gone in their ways.
