American Nations : A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America by Colin Woodard. I'm still reading this. Do you need a certain number of posts before you can start a new thread?

I started Utilitarianism : For and Against by J.J.C Smart and Bernard Williams yesterday. I hope the one arguing for doesn't misrepresent the hedonistic utilitarian position (more than he already has, with his emphasis on human happiness).
Beyond showing that some positions are morally inconsistent, I don't think normative ethics has anything to do with academic philosophy. -
The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons.
Great book that talks about in story form using real cases of people where brain disorders and surgeries affected people's personalities. It shows what which sides of the brain are responsible for how you act or move. Interesting note is there is still no answer as to where "consciousness" derives. Examples of stuff: some people have seizures and develop musical talents, some people can actually taste numbers and see sounds, some people with herpes can get a disease of the brain basically that makes you forget a lot, some people with chemical imbalances in the brain often display the same type of actions, some people develop from a disorder no fear of nothing. The way the book is written is easy to understand and by the time you walk away you actually feel like you learned some science -
years of English schooling condensed into a few hundred pages that explains simply, how to write a story. A really good, helpful read. Interesting autobiography stuff on King's life as well -
