Attorney General Eric Holder will step down from his position as the head of the Department of Justice, a White House official confirmed.
"This afternoon the president will announce the departure of Attorney General Eric Holder," the official told Business Insider. The announcement will come at 4:30 p.m. from the State Dining Room of the White House.
The official said that Holder, the nation's first black attorney general, will remain at the Justice Department until President Barack Obama appoints his successor and the person is confirmed by the US Senate. That process could stretch into early next year, depending on how quickly Obama appoints a new attorney general.
The news was first reported by NPR. The Justice Department didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
According to the NPR report, Holder wants to leave his position soon before he feels "locked in" to stay for the rest of Obama's tenure as president. Holder is one of the few remaining members from Obama's original Cabinet. He is also already the fourth-longest-serving attorney general in US history.
The White House touted his accomplishments ahead of the president's announcement.
"After serving for nearly six years as the head of the Justice Department, Holder is the first African American to be Attorney General of the United States and will be the fourth longest person to hold the position," the White House official said.
"Holder’s accomplishments have established a historic legacy of civil rights enforcement and restoring fairness to the criminal justice system. Holder revitalized the Department’s praised Civil Rights Division, protected the rights of the LGBT community, successfully prosecuted terrorists, and fought tirelessly for voting rights, to name a few," he said.
Holder's tenure has marked by a contentious relationship with Congress. In June 2012, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted to hold him in contempt of Congress, over a dispute involving the investigation into the flawed "Fast and Furious" gunrunning operation. He was the first attorney general to be held in contempt.
More recently, Holder has taken a proactive approach in leading the federal government's civil-rights investigation into the police department of Ferguson, Missouri, after the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, by white police officer Darren Wilson.

? seemed more on the financial side of the government giving out money. But I can honestly say that some those things listed has occured but there is also a lot of ? listed as well. Not going to dog Holder out cause nobody is perfect or even close to it. But IMO Holder and Obama to be in the positions they are never flexed their muscle the way could and should have. They both always came off as very weak to me. -

He's too progressive, term as attorney General was too controversial
If Obama gets to make the nomination sure it will be a centralist... Especially if the Republicans gain control of the senate soon

I wouldn't say failure. bush's presidency was a failure and he cleaned up a lot the mess that bush left. it was impossible to completely clean it up but he did a somewhat decent job. if he had a backbone or any semblance of fight he could have gotten so much more done. but he played ? and got ? so ? obama -

What mess did he clean up though? The economy is better, but at least part of that is due to things implemented before he became president and also the natural trends of the economy. Getting out of Iraq was one of his big wins, but it seems we're headed back in that direction. He passed some things like the Healthcare act, but he's never been able to get people to completely buy into those things and most of them will probably be heavily altered or repealed as soon as he leaves office. So basically, the legacy of his presidency will be nothing more than him being the first Black president, which isn't really all that good of a look for us. -

You posted a lot and like said in my other post he did some things positive and he has some ? on there just everybody else. Truth is in the details if you dig and look close enough you can see the both the positive and the ? .
