Earlier today, the NBA Live page on Facebook put up that image, and the answer seems to be "What is the new name of EA Sports' NBA franchise?" Correct! I'll take "Potpourri" for a thousand, Alex ...

That's according to Official Xbox Magazine, whose latest issue reveals the name change in an exclusive from EA Sports. NBA Elite 11 will deepen the use of the right analog stick in its control set, extending the work it started in Live 10.

"If the left stick is your body, then the right stick serves as your hands and the ball," OXM writes. "Bouncing the ball behind our back, for instance, required rolling the stick down and around - the same movement our hands would make to pull off the trick."

That means shots are on the right stick as well, and more tied to a player's physical ability with the sticks than a background attribute calculation.

This would make EA's NBA title more consistent with the kind of deterministic control philosophy found in Skate 3, Fight Night and the upcoming EA Sports MMA.

Additionally, canned animations are being phased out and replaced by real-time physics. This would allow players to interrupt animations with a pass or other move, rather than being committed to the entire animation playing out.

I emailed EA Sports to get a statement about the name change

An EA Sports spokesman gave the following comment to Kotaku:

We knew it was time to leave the past behind. We have exciting and significant changes coming to our NBA game this year that will usher in the future of basketball video games. We look forward to releasing information on exactly how we'll be doing that over the next few months

Earlier this year, Mike ? , NBA Live's lead gameplay designer, ended his one-year stint in Vancouver and defected back to NBA 2K where he'd worked before. ? and EA Sports were said to part company amicably, but substantial creative differences were assumed to be the catalyst for the breakup. A name change and new control set certainly herald a new direction for EA's hoops franchise.

I think this name change came from their doing of ? Live up from 06-09 giving it a bad rep. Live 10 is actually a pretty good hoops game but people stay away from it because of the bad reputation the series got.

The NBA Live basketball series as we know it is dead.

Electronic Arts announced its longstanding sports franchise will now be known as NBA Elite, and will release its first title under the new moniker for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this coming October.

"We plan to profoundly evolve the interactive basketball experience in a way that the category has not seen for a decade," says Peter Moore, President, EA Sports. "In NBA Elite 11, we'll introduce a gameplay experience that gives fans the control on the court that they have been begging for in a basketball game for years."

EA is promising several new gameplay features for the new title, including a 'Hands-On Control' scheme that allows for "one-to-one responsiveness of a player's movement and actions on the court" and updated real-time physics engine.

The company's 'Live' series first started 16 years ago, with the release of NBA Live 95. EA's NBA-licensed franchises have since sold 25 million copies.

    Enhanced Dribbling System
—The right analog stick controls your hand movements like never before, allowing you to dribble with one-to-one movement unique to NBA ELITE 11. Control the floor with all-new hesitations, spins, behind-the-back dribbles, and much more.

Call Your Shot—The days of predetermined outcomes based on a random push of the button are gone forever, as the result of every play is based on skill. Each player has a ‘sweet-spot’ and the ability to hit a shot is based on their skill set, defensive pressure, and proximity to the net. It’s up to you to put everything together and hit the shot.

The Drive to Win—The ability to drive to the net has never been so true to the game of basketball. Independent control of your hands and feet allows you to maneuver and dribble with precision, making the drive down the lane based on skill instead of a scripted defensive reaction.

Defense Matters—Independent hand controls also allow you to be more strategic on defense as you use the right analog stick to make steal attempts and game-changing blocks.

Feel the Game Like Never Before
—Radically improved game physics rid the days of locked animated sequences leaving you in control of the player at all times. When you drive aggressively to the net and go up with authority, you can be sure that whoever is standing in your way is going to be knocked to the ground.
