Due to privilege, welfare and food stamps weren't an option for them, although a lot of white people do need public assistance to get by in this country--yet not to the degree of people of color. They weren't forced to grow up quickly. I saw how they were building up the suburbs, but how people living in my aunt's neighborhood on the south side were constantly being stripped of resources and experienced unemployment and surveillance. Also, growing up in a white suburb makes you constantly question your identity, which is why I stayed to myself. -
