How did the practice/custom/tradition of placing a cross over graves start? Who started it? Does it predate organized religion?

This purely conjecture on my part, being that the United States is a Christian nation and most of the people here are Christians,
it probably something to do with the recognizing your faith. -
So ? could know who the faithful are at the end

Its probably one of those things where the living bury the dead and want to show their ? that the deceased was a believer.

how high are you right now?

Christianity didn't exist until a time period so it came from when crazy Christian believers started it. It does not predate organized religion as people didn't used to bury bodies. They burned them.

The cross is a symbol of the reality of the resurrection. And all who die in Christ will be made alive when He comes again. Thus the cross is a symbol of that hope. Hallelujah!
Now the question is are you ready for the LORD to come again? Because He is about to BOW down the heavens! Hallelujah!

Isn't it just suppose to represent jesus?
I think the cross was just another method of torture before that.
