It brought the game a more to the forefront of american sports. It was a place where you could showcase your talent to the world and it be televised and written about in newspapers. You could not do that anywhere else. This is why players had there best games in NYC because they knew if they did the whole country would hear about it. Also, the NBA draft has always been held there.
Best post that is ny pro mecca -

Word. And honestly, as much as I'd hate to say it being born in Oklahoma -- Florida has 100x more reason to call itself the mecca of football than NYC has to call itself the mecca of B-ball.
- Half the GOAT players in league today are from there. (and it's not even that big like Texas and California.)
- The home of the only undefeated NFL team in history ('72 Dolphins.)
- Iconic College programs (FSU, Florida, Miami.)
- Nationally ranked high school teams galore.
- Numerous Super Bowls played there in THREE different cities (Jax, Tampa, Miami - which has hosted the most Super Bowls.)
etc, etc. But cats from Florida don't act like they invented the game of football.
Miami (THE U) should never be listed after FSU & Florida. -
New York is the media capital of the usa. So anything done there will be blown out of proportion.
There is no factual way anybody can claim that no look passes, fancy dribbling and dunking and all that was first done in NY. The media hype around NY basketball made those claims.
There is no way to know that all that ? wasn't done someplace else before it was done there. -
Nyc is the capital of cardboard pizza

FOH talkin' about facts. That article is BS.
All I can say about NYC being " The Mecca of Basketball" still is...
D. Wade -5th overall draft pick
D.Rose -1st overall draft pick
Anthony Davis- 1st overall draft pick
Jabari Parker- 2nd overall draft pick
Jahlil Okafor- future 1st overall draft pick
Amazing. -

Reading this thread is funny.
Ppl say ? like "mj was born in BK but he moved at 3 months old so it dont count"
Then say "how is ny the mecca when the knicks suck"
Not all their players are from NY so how can u judge NY ball by a group of ? thats from other cities?
Not including melo of course -
The geographic location of a player's birthplace usually dont mean ? . Serious ballers leave home to play at big name universities.
Those experiences with coaches/mentors and that individuals drive to compete is what hones skill not the coordinates of their neighborhood on the map.
What I will say is altho I never been to ny they seemed to have a strong basketball CULTURE thru out the city back in the day and nba players would make it a point to play pick up at legendary playgrounds. That says something about their culture which if u love basketball u should respect.
all this other ? is high school ? talk.
